Friesland, known in Frisian as Fryslân, is a province of lakes, meadows and villages. The Frisian Lakes lie in the south-west, the Wadden Sea and the islands of Terschelling and Ameland in the north, and dairy farms fill the land in between. Estates, country houses and farmhouses are spread across the countryside, and many group houses stand by the water.
From Amsterdam or Utrecht, Leeuwarden is about two to two and a half hours away by car or train, and it is closer from Groningen. For a team that wants water, open skies and quiet, a stay of two or three days works better than a day trip. Leeuwarden and Sneek are good places for an evening out.
