Hesse lies in the middle of Germany, with Frankfurt as its financial hub and Kassel to the north. Its scenery is mostly low hills and forest, with the Taunus, the Rhön, the Vogelsberg and the Odenwald on its edges. Castles, hunting lodges and country estates are scattered through these wooded areas, and the Rhine and Main valleys add vineyards and river towns.
Frankfurt Airport and its station are the main gateway, and ICE trains from Amsterdam and Cologne call there, so the train is practical for Frankfurt and the larger cities. For the Rhön and the Vogelsberg, which lie further from the rail network, the car is the better choice. The trip from the Netherlands usually takes most of a day.
