Dutch Limburg is the southernmost province, with rolling hills around Maastricht, Valkenburg and Vaals. The highest point in the Netherlands, the Vaalserberg, lies here. Castles and estates sit among the orchards and wooded valleys of the Geul and the Maas, and the hills hold many group houses and holiday parks. Compared with the flat polders of the west, the hills give the area a very different character.
From Eindhoven or Venlo most of the province is roughly an hour away by car. From Amsterdam or Utrecht, plan for two to three hours of travel, which suits a stay of several days rather than a day trip. The hills and the cycle routes along the Geul make it a green base for a team that wants some exercise, and Belgian Limburg is just across the border.
